Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono underscored the importance of continued innovation within ASEAN Plus Three (APT) to ensure that the bloc's cooperation strategy remains relevant to current challenges.

Speaking at the 27th ASEAN Plus Three Meeting on the sidelines of the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) in the Philippines on Thursday (July 23), he said ASEAN Plus Three had produced various concrete cooperation initiatives, underscoring the bloc's strength in the region.

"The continued relevance of ASEAN Plus Three will depend on its ability to adapt, innovate, and deliver concrete results. Therefore, innovation must be at the forefront of our collective efforts," the minister said in a speech published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday.

He noted that ASEAN Plus Three cooperation is becoming increasingly important as the impact of conflicts beyond the region continues to disrupt energy markets and supply chains.

Therefore, he said, the partnership must be able to address both current and future challenges.

Sugiono highlighted the success of ASEAN Plus Three's food security cooperation through its Emergency Food Reserve mechanism.

He also called for expanding that successful cooperation to other sectors, including agricultural innovation, food supply chain resilience, and food reserve diversification.

Meanwhile, in the financial sector, Sugiono said the multilateralized Chiang Mai Initiative could provide up to US$240 billion as a regional financial safety net.

Indonesia also welcomed the progress achieved under the initiative, particularly the implementation of the Rapid Financing Facility (RFF) and support for the financial structure roadmap.

"Such reforms will accelerate access to funding through the Chiang Mai Initiative and ensure its effective utilization during crises," he said.

Furthermore, Sugiono called for ASEAN Plus Three cooperation to uphold the principles of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), as reflected in the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).

"As ASEAN advances the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, ASEAN Plus Three also plays a crucial role in strengthening ASEAN-led cooperation," he added.

ASEAN Plus Three was established in 1997 as a platform for cooperation between ASEAN member states and three East Asian partnersβ€”China, Japan, and South Korea.
