Environment Ministry takes legal action on 21 firms over forest fires - ANTARA News Jawa Timur
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Environment Ministry has launched law enforcement proceedings and installed official monitoring markers across 21 companies after forest and land fires scorched over 11,400 hectares across seven provinces in Kalimantan and Sumatra.
Deputy for Environmental Law Enforcement at the Environment Ministry/Environmental Control Agency (BPLH) Rizal Irawan confirmed that Civil Servant Investigators (PPNS) are currently on the ground conducting field verifications and sealing off affected sites.
"All 21 business entities are currently undergoing field verification and the installation of monitoring signs by our investigators,” Rizal told ANTARA on Wednesday (September 2).
Official data from the ministry reveals that South Kalimantan sustained the largest single-province burn footprint, where four companies accounted for 6,595.15 hectares of damaged land.
West Kalimantan saw the highest concentration of corporate enforcement, with seven companies under investigation across 3,760.03 hectares.
The remaining operations span South Sumatra (four companies, 727.77 ha), Central Kalimantan (three companies, 95.20 ha), Lampung (one company, 202.73 ha), Riau (one company, 11.91 ha), and East Kalimantan (one company, 5.01 ha).
The total burned area under active enforcement currently stands at 11,404.69 hectares.
The enforcement surge follows preventative warnings issued by Environment Minister Moh Jumhur Hidayat, who previously sent official notices to 2,226 companies across the country.
The advisories mandated that landholders prepare adequate firefighting personnel, proper infrastructure, and clear mitigation plans to prevent flare-ups.
Addressing regional concerns over transboundary smoke, Rizal noted that Minister Jumhur chaired the Ministerial Steering Committee (MSC) on Transboundary Haze Pollution in Bali on July 9, 2026.
The high-level meeting convened environmental leadership from Malaysia, Singapore, and delegate officials across ASEAN member states.
"ASEAN member nations reaffirmed their collective commitment to the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution (AATHP) and the target of a Transboundary Haze-Free ASEAN by 2030," Rizal said, adding that the session was preceded by the 27th Technical Working Group (TWG) meeting.
